Baby Boomers Are To Blame
By: Carmen R.
The topic of properly disciplining children is a constant conversation. Spankings vs. freedom of expression, where do you stand? Did a lack of discipline during child rearing create a Millennial Monster? Baby Boomers (born between 1945 to 1964) are blaming Millennials (born between 1980 to 1997) for being pompous, unmanageable, and an overall detriment to our governmental structures. However, Baby Boomers are the parents of Millennials.
What typifies proper disciplinary actions? Some believe spanking a child leads to alcoholism, unemployment, relationship failure, and educational disconnection. Because of this, many Baby Boomers use timeouts as a way to stop certain behaviors. The most common alternative to spankings is a timeout. A timeout is to children, as jail is to adults. Some feel, placing unruly individuals in jail will provide the support needed to function in a civilized society. Others feel spanking a child today will eliminate jail time tomorrow.
According to the FBI, from 2013 through 2017, the estimated number of violent crimes for the nation was 1,168,298. In 2014, there were 1,153,022 violent crimes. In 2015, there were 1,199,310 violent crimes. In 2016, there were 1,250,162 violent crimes. And in 2017, there were 1,247,321 violent crimes.
It’s not clear if a connection exists between people murdering each other as adults and receiving spankings as a child. Who’s to blame for a large number of murders during 2013 - 2017? Blame it on the Baby Boomers!
